Complex Sexual Trauma Therapy

Over the past 20 years I have noted some very interesting commonalities with my clients.

The most prevalent, is we (myself and the client) seem to discover that so much of their experience with anxiety, depression, and the depth of their trauma-related symptoms are exacerbated by evidence of early, innate understanding of how families and the world in general should function.

Second, and in line with the first, most of my clients surpass the emotional maturity of their parents or other primary care providers at a very early age. This results in parent-child conflict and a very confused child (who grows up to be a client discovering these dynamics here in my office).

Third, my clients tend to stay up at night and spend most of the day trying to battle the "noise in my head" experience. They feel unsettled, and they keep trying to make sense of the world.

At the same time, they’re on continual high alert for the next unexpected and uncontrollable event.

Most decide to reach out to me in the hopes of clearing their confusion, to confirm that they aren't crazy, and to establish the connections that they were born expecting to experience.

If You’ve Previously Gone to Therapy…

Therapy is often what I call "soft and fluffy."

The majority of my clients have already seen 2-3 therapists prior to coming to my office.

They tend to express that they felt compassion from their counselor, but most often, they were left without insight and mechanisms for change.

Unfortunately, an approach of too much listening and validating often inadvertently reinforces the fear of the client that even though somebody may care or hear them, that's as good as it gets. Nothing ever changes, and nothing ever will.

Compassion and validation are certainly key components of therapy. However, healing requires a few other components.

The Healthiest Relationship You’ve Ever Experienced

There is an argument that the relationship between a therapist and a client could serve as the healthiest relationship you have ever experienced.

If so, then the healing approach must reflect healthy relationship dynamics.

For you to heal, your thinking must be challenged. Maladaptive behaviors should not be ignored in order to ensure that you stay comfortable.

Healing requires self-reflection. Directness, care, and compassion can all coexist in a healthy relationship. I aim to bring this blend of genuine care with compassionate directness to every session with my clients.

Just on that basis, what you will experience here with me will be powerfully different from your prior therapy experiences.

Other Components of Effective Therapy

In my view, education is key component of effective therapy. You need to learn about the functions of your brain, the central nervous system, and the role these systems play in the symptoms you’ve been experiencing.

Additionally, it’s important that you actually apply all of the above in your real life. Exposure to environments and experiences is part of this. Exercises and new behaviors allow you to ground each therapy session’s new information and insights into your daily life.

By following this approach, you will see how your world can change in a paced, structured, and safe way.

When Your Mind Quiets Down

One day a few years ago, a client came into my office with a very excited and curious look on her face.

She never sat down. She just stood looking awestruck in the middle of the room.

I asked her what was on her mind. This 43-year-old woman said: “For the first time in my life, it is quiet in my head.”

I asked her what she wanted to do with this new experience.

She asked, "Well, what am I supposed to be thinking about?"

She fell to the floor when I stated: "It’s your mind, and you're free to think about whatever comes to mind."

Evidence That Therapy is Working

With the growth you experience, there are a few things to look forward to that serve as evidence of change.

As mentioned above, you will find your mind is clear from all of the noises of shame, doubt, guilt, and fear that have relentlessly occupied every aware moment that you’ve previously experienced. Experiencing this inner quiet brings immense relief.

Over time, you will find that you forgot how you thought in the past. I'll tell you old ways you used to think, and you won't believe me.

Your posture will improve. Your eye contact, word fluency, and articulation will become streamlined and easy.

The fear that follows you everywhere right now will be replaced by curiosity.

You will find your voice and forget to worry about whether you should speak or not.

All these and many more changes can ripple into your life thanks to effective therapy with the right professional.
